SUMMARY: Iberville Parish residents voiced concerns over a new Mississippi River bridge discussed by DOTD at the State Capitol. Officials suggested the bridge might connect Plaquemine to near St. Gabriel to ease traffic in Baton Rouge. While DOTD project manager Joseph Brown emphasized improved commuting, residents like Laura Comeaux fear it would destroy Plaquemine Point, an old-growth forest with environmental certifications. Comeaux highlighted the forest’s value and solitude, urging its removal from the project list. Brown acknowledged their worries, stating that DOTD seeks community feedback to ensure a comprehensive project view.

SUMMARY: At St. Julian Park in Broussard, 10,000 rubber ducks were released during the Acadian Duck Derby to support the Second Harvest Food Bank. Community members could purchase a $5 duck, with all proceeds going to fight hunger. The event, organized by Second Harvest, drew significant local support, including the mayor. Highlights included watching the ducks race, assisted by the fire department spraying water to guide them to the finish line. Twenty prizes were awarded, with the grand prize of $5,000 won by Cody Smith. The event raised enough funds to provide over 150,000 free meals to those in need.

SUMMARY: The U.S. Justice Department plans to propose that Boeing plead guilty to fraud related to two deadly 737 Max jetliner crashes. Boeing has until the end of the week to accept or reject the plea deal, which includes agreeing to independent monitoring for compliance with anti-fraud laws. The Justice Department communicated this plea offer to relatives of the 346 victims from the 2018 and 2019 crashes during a video meeting. Families expressed anger, preferring further prosecution over a plea deal. If Boeing rejects the offer, the Justice Department may pursue a trial. A conviction could impact Boeing's federal contracts.

SUMMARY: Starting Monday, a California law mandates credit card networks like Visa and Mastercard to assign special retail codes to gun stores to track sales, aiming to flag suspicious purchases and potentially prevent crimes. Conversely, states like Georgia, Iowa, Tennessee, and Wyoming are enacting laws to ban these codes, fearing unwarranted scrutiny of lawful gun buyers. This reflects a deeper national divide on gun policy, with Democratic states implementing stricter measures and Republican states opposing them. The contentious debate underscores differing views on balancing public safety and Second Amendment rights, revealing a stark partisan split on gun control issues.
